Users Coming Off Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals using these drugs need to be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

People who have stopped the medication explain a intense return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
