France to begin stopping small boats in English Channel after UK pressure
French officials have consented to start stopping small boats in the Channel, following months of insistence from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy follows the British leader wrote to the French leader asking him to back the initiative and saying there currently "have no effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to official statements.
French police have infrequently acted to stop the heavily loaded boats leaving the coastline because it is considered too great a danger to both personnel and civilians.
"It is essential that we deploy these methods this month... We have no effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Now, a French maritime police representative says personnel will start taking action at sea, with the aim of safeguarding human life.
Notably, the official ruled out the use of nets to intercept boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible method to snarl the propellers of the boats.
This determination to take action at all is a significant step forward, following a short-lived change towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which dropped off when the previous government official left government.
That was highlighted in July, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and President, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a boat.
Now French officials will again be allowed to intercept boats before they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of northern France, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Strong winds are presently postponing the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for methods to adapt to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for comment.
